Athens was conquered and destroyed time aAccommodation in Athensnd time again but, like the mythical bird, the Phoenix always managed to rise from its ashes. In ancient Greece, particularly in the 4th century BC, during the Peloponnesian War, Athens was one of the leading powers. The Romans conquered it in the 1st century BC.
Subsequently during the Byzantine period it suffered greatly at the hands of the Catalans, Florentines and the Venetians. The Turks also conquered the city in 1687, who ruled it until May 1827.
In 1833 it became the capital of Greece and from a farming community, centred on the Acropolis, developed into the cosmopolitan centre that it is today. |
